2337 Broadway, Oakland
For this restaurant and bar buildout, Black Creek teamed up with Oakland restauranteur Chris Pastena, famous for Chop Bar and Lungomare, to construct Calavera, an upscale Oaxacan-style Mexican restaurant in Uptown’s new Hive development, a mixed-use urban micro-community offering spaces for eating, drinking, meeting, shopping and living.
As many of the finishes had not been determined in advance, Black Creek had the opportunity to play a larger role in finessing final details. Highlights include the hand-finished custom leather bar top and clear epoxy table-tops, a display wall for tequila and mescal, accessible by sliding library ladder, an indoor wood-burning grill for cooking fresh tortillas, and extensive lighting designs and controls engineered to meet California’s latest Title-24 Energy Conservation codes. Along the back wall shines the image of a calavera (the restaurant’s namesake, Spanish for skull) constructed of light and shadow.
