Kitchens & Bathrooms
1739 Broadway, Oakland
The Miranda is an upscale cocktail bar in downtown Oakland (right next door to The Punchdown, another Black Creek bar buildout). Early in the design phase, owners Demetrius Chapin-Rienzo, Adi Taylor and Nathan Johnson were thinking of calling their swanky new lounge “Hotel Bar,” and you can see why.
Even though there’s no hotel, the fixtures and finishes are inspired by the lavish elegance of an old-school art deco hotel lobby, somewhere you might imagine Jay Gatsby enjoying a drink in 1922. Dim, elegant, faux-Edison bulbs hang, chandelier-like from high ceilings, above bold and floral custom wallpaper prints, antique hooded porter’s chairs, curved booths with ottomans, velvet curtains and potted palms. The front and back bars are divided by a wall of vintage mail slots—with keys and letters and liquor. Think: opulent and nostalgic.
Black Creek performed the entire buildout—carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, equipment, fixtures and finishes— including the double bar, lounge, lobby, two new ADA bathrooms, storage and basement areas. The tenant improvement transformed an empty retail space into the love letter to the past it is today.
