Kitchens & Bathrooms
1737 Broadway, Oakland
The Punchdown is a natural wine bar (sustainable, organic, biodynamic), owned and operated by D.C. Looney and Lisa Costa. When the husband and wife team lost the lease for their first location, thriving on the edge of Franklin Square in 2013, they were heartbroken, but they didn’t let that stop them. They found a new Uptown Oakland spot with a little more room just down the street, and started over, hiring Black Creek to build out the new space from scratch.
Odd Tooth Design
Along with the standard carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work, we built a small kitchen for their expanded small plate menu, installed new bathrooms with funky space-saving sliding doors, refinished the original Terrazzo flooring and crown molding, and constructed a custom, temperature and humidity-controlled room for wine storage and retail.
We worked closely with the owners to accommodate their goals and choices for finish designs, some of which they wanted to do themselves. For example, they repurposed old-growth redwood from 1930s-era wine barrels for the new bar and installed it with the help of friends. Other accents include a communal table of volcanic wood from a Hawaiian mango tree, 100-year-old apricot crates for wine storage, and sculptural pieces of gnarled tree bur for aerial decoration.
